Understanding Stats

It has come to my attention that some people would like a quick run down of the stats sheet. For the most part all stats sheets look the same but I'll point out a couple of differences from the normal BYU. So here it is(from left to right):

  • S: Sets - the number of sets a player played in.
  • K: Kills - the number of kills a player gets. A kill is defined as an attack the leads to a point.
  • E: Error - the number of attacking errors per player. An error is received when the attack attempt results in a point for the other team.
  • TA: Attacking attempts - the number of connected swings a player takes at the ball.
  • PCT: Hitting percentage - the number of kills minus the number of errors divided by the number of attempts.
  • AST: Assists - the number of assist per player. An assist is defined as the pass/set before a kill. Usually the setter gets most of these, followed by the libero.
  • SA: Service Aces - the number of services per player that result in a direct point.
  • SE: Service Errors - the number of services per player that result in a point for the other team (out or into the net).
  • Dig: Dig -  the number of digs per player. A dig is the pass before the set. Usually the libero gets most of these.
  • BS: Solo block - the number of solo blocks for a player. A solo block is a block in which only one player went up, and blocks the ball entirely by themselves.
  • BA: Block assist - the number of blocks a player assisted in. Given to all the players that assisted in a block.
  • BE: Block error - the number of blocking errors per player. Given for a player going into the net.
  • BH: Ball Handling (?) - I'm not 100% on this one but I think it stands for a ball handling error such as a lift.
  • PTS: points - the number of points that an individual player is directly responsible for. This is not something that BYU calculates but many other schools do. Simply put give a player 1 point for each kill, ace, or solo block. Then give them 1/2 of a point for each block assist. Add these together and you have the points!
That's pretty much it. Comment if you have a clarification or need one!

  1. Thanks Erin - just what I needed. Unfortunately I read this after I read the next one - so ignore my latest request for more information. What would I do without you???

  2. Done! I got a flood of text from Michelle so I figured I'd better get right on it! You, and everyone else, would have to just stare dumbfounded into space without me! ;)
