And the Champions are...BYU!
The Lady Cougars took first place in Varney's Kansas State Invitational Tournament! After handily defeating Idaho and Georgia Southern on Friday, BYU went head to head against Kansas State on Saturday and came out on top.
The Wildcats and Cougars came on to the court ready to fight for first place in the tourney, but BYU found its rhythm first and brought home the win in three, 25-23, 25-29, 25-23.
Both teams looked to their sophomores for leadership. BYU's opposite Jen , and the Wildcat's middle blocker Kaitlynn Pelger lead their teams in hitting with 17 and 20 kills respectively. In fact Jen lead the tournament as MVP, which probably has something to do with a hitting percentage of .438 which lead both teams. Our middle blocker, Nicole, also came out strong for our defense with 6 kills for that day and more throughout the tourney. Nicole was also named to the all-tournament team, and contributed 5 kills and an ace for the day.
For most of the match play went back and forth with both teams unable to take a significant lead, except in the second set, until the last play. In the end BYU had more hitters on board leading to a hitting percentage of .303 to KState's .180. For more stats visit here, and for BYU's report of the match visit here.
Congrats to the Cougars on their 4 game winning streak, I hope to watch them keep it up against BYU-Hawaii on WEDNESDAY this week in the Fieldhouse before they head to the U of U for another tournament.
GO COUGARS!
