After letting last night's match slip through their hands the lady Cougars came back stronger than the football team for a four set win against the Matadors of Cal State Northridge, 25-15, 25-22, 16-25, 25-17.
The Cougars dominated the first set denying the Matadors a chance to even tie the set. Our hitters came on strong for the first two sets hitting .367 and .242 in the first two sets. Individually Jen, Christie and Nicole lead the Cougars with 16, 8 and 7 kills each. Kat came up next with 6 kills. The each hit .282, .154, .429, and .333 with Jen contributing 2 service aces.
Sensing their doom the Matadors managed to hold off the sweep in the third set with their defense, and putting the Cougars in a hole they couldn't climb out of. For the set the Cougars hit negative, while the Matadors just managed to stay positive. CSUN's 18 blocks came in handy, compared to only 12 Cougar blocks.
Both teams scrambled for the fourth set, but improved Cougar hitting proved too much for the Matadors, as they improved to .226 compared to .118. As usual the play starts with a pass and 67 digs for the Cougars contributed to a winning defense and offense. Kendalyn once again shone on defense with 25 digs, to tie her career high. Jen and Christie also contributed double digit digs with 13 and 10 respectively (giving Jen her second double-double of the weekend and fifth of the season).
With the win the Cougars improve their record to 11-3 as they close out pre-conference play. (Just compare that to 3-9 from last season to see where the Cougars are headed this year.) See you in the Fieldhouse to begin conference play on Thursday against St. Mary's!
Go Cougars!
