This afternoon most of Provo had their eyes on Oregon as two BYU teams faced off against opponents, the University of Portland, and Oregon State. Both return home next week with victories under their belts.
After a slow start in the first set the Cougars came out strong hitting .458 and adding 4 blocks to the Pilots 0. The Cougars took the set 25-16, following the lead of Christie. On the match Christie lead everyone, throwing down 20 kills and leading everyone (that had more than a dozen sets) in hitting percentage with a fantastic .341. She also contributed 11 digs for her third double-double of the season. Incidentally, 20 is a season-high for Christie.
The Pilots struggled longer in the second set keeping the score relatively close until about 12s. Then Christie, Jen, and Nicole sparked the Cougars to pull ahead and take the set 25-17. Nicole played well on defense putting up 4 blocks to lead both teams, and added 7 kills for good measure. Jen came out with her eighth double-double of the season contributing 16 kills (.333), 2 assists, 10 digs, an ace, and 3 blocks.
We must have been feeling bad for the Pilots, after they lost both their setter and back-up in the first 2 sets, because the Cougars couldn't seem to get their act together and lost the third set (18-25). Each side tied about 6 times during the set, but in the end it the Pilots had the stuff to push ahead. Oregon native Tia helped out the Cougars on defense tying Christie for digs with 11, and lead both teams in aces with 2.
Back for the fourth set the Cougars took control early and didn't mess around as they went for a 25-15 victory. Again lead by Christie the Cougars came to 22-11 before putting in Oregon native Kimberli and back-up setter Kemi. The pair came up with the timely match point. Kimberli ended with a kill and a block, while Kemi posted 2 assists for the match.
Thanks to all of the Boswells and Withers that came out. We could sure here you cheering our girls on!
The Cougars will stay in the rainy states as they play against Gonzaga on Monday.
Here is the Cougar Report and Stats.
