Cougars at Malibu

Playing down in Malibu, the Cougars are still struggling to win in California. On October 8, the Cougars dropped a tough game to a tough team and crowd at Pepperdine.

Despite great effort by some players, the Cougars lost their second four set match, and second loss to a top 20 team.

After the first two sets (16-25 and 17-25) the Cougars seemed destined for a shut-out match. Throughout the first two sets the Cougars struggled to finish their points, while every Wave dig seemed to find their setter without effort.

Not counting themselves out, the Cougars brought on a win in the third set (25-22). Great late efforts from all around included Jess, Jen, Christie, and Nicole. Christie had an all around amazing night recording her second double-double of the season and leading the Cougars in kills with 14, while putting up 15 digs, an ace, and a block to round off her night. 15 digs ties Christie's career high in that category.

Jen came up second in kills with 12, adding 2 aces, 8 digs, and 3 blocks. Just short of a third double figure killer Kat laid down 7 while also contributing a block. Nicole contributed 6 blocks, but just 2 kills for the Cougars. Clearly if the Cougars had brought their top 10 blocking game, this might have been an entirely different match.

Throughout the 4th set the Cougars kept up their momentuem, and seemed set on a five set match. In the end, the Waves came back to take the 4th set (25-27) and the match. We hope to show the Waves a different sort of coin when we send the packing from Provo in a week.

Here is the Cougar Report and Stats.
