Cougars Whip Cowgirls

I'm pretty sure that title says it all about the ladies' 73-48 win over Wyoming on Wednesday, Feb 2. The Cougars came out on fire and never let up the entire game. To view the story as told by the stats take a look here. But if you want the better, I mean my version, that's below.

Both teams came out looking great, but only one had the stuff to prove that they are great. If I had to identify the two strengths of these teams I would say that the Cowgirls have height and rebounding, while the Cougars have rebounding and teamwork. For this game the Cougars' teamwork carried them forward. The fire and desire in the Cougar's eyes came out as they played. A close first half ended with an amazing 3 point, half-court buzzer-beating shot from senior Haley Hall. When BYU came out the second time their fire never let up, and Wyoming could not touch them.

By the time the final buzzer sounded BYU had ousted Wyoming in every category except free throws, because the Cougars had only approached the line twice. But these stats don't give the full picture behind the game. Here the real story is in one very special stat, BYU made it to 49 points, with no player in double digits. Here the real story is teamwork.

I have always felt that the real key to the Cougars' success is their teamwork. Often people and the media *cough*DU*cough* like to focus on key players and those with the best stats of the night, especially points, rebounds, and blocks. But these ladies have learned to focus on their team as a whole and as individuals. in doing so they have pushed their team forward as the team recognizes which player has a particularly luck shot each night and just letting them have the ball again and again.

I'll admit that I first started paying attention to this trend following the tragic loss to TCU but during which one Jen Hamson had an amazing night with her first double-double of the season. But then the trend continued Haley Hall and Mindy Bonham against Colorado State, Kristen Riley against SDSU, and Coriann Fraughton against the Lobos. The most amazing part of all this? None of these players took that attitude that they were the "one" that night. Each was more than happy to pass and play with the rest of their team. And so it is that I believe that our teamwork will carry us through the rest of  the season.

A couple of notes on the actual game:
1) With this win the Cougars are officially in first place in conference, with this game as the conclusion of the first half. GO COUGARS!
2) This picture is simply awesome no?
Apparently Jen had been practicing dunking before the game, and the band thought that she should give us one in the game.
