Our volleyball Cougars fought a tough battle last night in their home season opener against #7/8 Illinois.
The first two sets our women came out strong jumping to 3-0 leads. Following that both sides tied frequently, nearly 20 times in the two sets, but ultimately the Fighting Illini* pulled ahead at the end to win both sets 28-26, and 25-22. In the third set Illinois showed their age and experience against a worn BYU team, handily winning the set 25-16.

Jen led the match with 17 kills and .310 scoring. (For those of you that aren't sure, that is pretty awesome!) Setter Heather led the assists with 27, and contributed 15 digs. Kendyln assisted on the defensive end with the second most digs at 9, while Kat and Nicole contributed 4 blocks each. See the rest of the stats here.
Overall the team came out with high spirits and significant improvements in serving and passing over last year. To stay in a close game with a top 10 team shows exactly where our Cougars are headed as their season pushes forward. I am so proud of all my girls!
*So I had no idea what an Illini was supposed to be. Here is what the internet told me, it is after all the single source for all important and absolutely correct information is it not? An Illini is a tribe of native Americans that inhabited the Illinois region before the white man. They have since become the mascot of the University of Illinois. Similar to that red team no one likes... ;) *
