Last night nearly all of the BYU student athletes, their coaches, friends and family gathered in the Wilikinson Center's ballroom to celebrate BYU athletics and the Y awards. For more on the Y awards and all of the winners see here. The Women's Basketball and Volleyball teams had these nominees and winners.
Leona Holbrook Spirit of Sport Award:
Basketball's Haley Hall took home this award for her excellent performance this past season and the way she exemplifies the spirit of her sport.
Comeback Player of the Year:
BYU basketball's Kim "Kimmer" Parker was up for this award, however baseball's Alex Wolfe captured the award, for his success on the field after injuries last season.
Walk on of the Year:
Volleyball's Kendalyn Hartsock came away with the walk on of the year award after proving invaluable to the team last season. Later in the show Kendalyn promised to "walk all over" hubby Noah, despite his height and having played with Jimmer. Kendalyn has played with Jennifer, we all know which is more impressive.
Female Athlete of the Year:
Basketball's Mindy Bonham was up for the female athlete of the year for her stellar performances time and time again when the Cougars needed her on the court. All-American Lacey Bleazard of the Track and Field team ultimately came away with the award.
Finally the most important award of the evening, Female Rookie of the Year:
Basketball's and Volleyball's Jennifer Hamson ousted her competition with amazing performances in two sports as a freshman. In her shoes Jen was approximately 6' 11" and declared "not tall enough" for the podium. Jake Heaps did not know what to do with himself after. Jen leads the basketball team in blocks, and has career highs of 19 points, 13 rebounds and nine blocks.
Other highlights from the evening included dancing from Futi Tavana and friends, finding out who we could "take home to mom", and ten worst moments of BYU athletics from 2010-2011. The lesson from these moments is that our basketball team cannot dunk*Jimmer**Noah*.
Congratulations to all of the winners, and yes your families are a big support. Everyone except for Jen will continue to hope that her future stellar performances are recognized by the Cougar Club.
