BYU Dominates at Rice Invitational

Aug. 24 - 25, 2012 BYU, Rice, Arkansas State and Air Force participated in the Rice invitational. BYU dominated, of course. Friday night BYU debued with a 3 set win over Arkansas State. Saturday morning the Cougars continued their winning tradition with a 3 set victory over former MWC opponent Air Force. Saturday evening BYU capped the tournament with a 3 set victory over host Rice.
Jenn was named Most Valuable Player. She along with Heather and Alexa made the All-Tournament Team.
BYU vs Arkansas State
Despite an early lead by Arkansas in the first set, the Cougars came back in winning style behind outside Jessica Jardine. BYU took the first set (25-14) and then didn't let up winning set two (25-15) and three (25-12). Jess led the Cougars in kills with 16 followed by Jenn with 13 and Alexa with 11. All were assisted by setter Heather who tallied 43 sets. In the back row Ciara led with 14 digs followed by Tia with 10 and Jen with 7.
BYU vs Air Force
The Cougars came out strong Saturday morning putting on pressure for which Air Force seemed to have no answer. BYU decidedly won all three sets (25-16, 25-12. 25-11). Jess and Jenn led with 13 kills each followed by 6 from Alexa. Heather assisted wonderfully with 33 sets followed by Ciara with 4. Ciara led in the back row with 12 digs followed by Tia with 10 and Heather with 7. Kat led the Cougars in block with 6 assists followed by Jess and Jenn with 4 each.
BYU vs Rice
Playing the host is always difficult but despite some struggles BYU still came up with the 3 set victory. (25-23, 25-29, 25-22) Both BYU and Rice made runs in all the sets, with Rice coming ahead early for most of the sets. However, the Cougars always mounted a successful come back to take each set. Jenn led the Cougars in hitting putting away 18 balls. Alexa and Kat followed suit with 13 and 9. Heather assisted well setting the ball 46 times, Ciara added 3 sets of her own. Heather and Ciara also recorded 2 service aces a piece. Ciara led in the back row once more with 22 digs followed by Tia with 8 and Jess with 6. Nicole led in blocks with a solo block and 5 assists, Jenn followed with a solo and 4 assists capped by Kat with 2 assists.
